Africa Affordable Medicines

i+solutions works closely with partners in Uganda and South Africa to set up a joint venture called Africa Affordable Medicines. This is a new pharmacy franchise venture, aiming at improving access to medicines at the end-user level in Uganda. The project aims at increasing the availability of essential medicines at the local level, at the right time, in the right place, in the right quantity and at an affordable price.

This unique and innovative initiative for Uganda is to fill the transportation and retail distribution gap by creating a Franchise Organization in Uganda, consisting of a chain of franchise pharmacies with stock and holding store facilities, preferably linked with associated drug stores or clinics, and supervised and monitored by a central franchise organization.

Africa Affordable Medicines strives to develop strong partner relationships with all major players in the Ugandan health sector, being the Ministry of Health (including the government-owned National Medical Stores), the National Drug Authority, the faith-based Joint Medical Store, major local producers/wholesalers and the Ugandan Pharmaceutical Society.

The pilot project of the JV-AAM aims at the establishment and implementation of the central franchise organization and of 20 pharmacies in 20 districts, covering more than 50% of the Ugandan population.

The further aim after two years is to extend the franchise pharmacy chain of 20 retail outlets, which over time might result in minimum one outlet in every Ugandan district, in order to bring (essential) medicines as close as possible to the doorstep of every Ugandan.
